Two commission inquiries in a row
I received another email today about a possible commission. A company was looking for between five and ten kinetic desktop sculptures based on their logo, with an initial deadline of 23 June. I didn't immediately say no and followed up on the enquiry. They understood that such a short timescale was unrealistic and said they would be able to allow more time if needed. After I signed an NDA, they sent through their new logo design and some further details about the project. In

Embracing the Wind: How Kinetic Sculpture Changed My View of Blustery Days
There was a time when I disliked windy days. Like many people, I saw them as an inconvenience. A strong breeze meant tying things down, chasing loose objects around the garden and putting off outdoor jobs until the weather improved. Wind was simply something to be endured. Then I started creating kinetic sculptures. Now I find myself looking at the weather forecast hoping for a bit of wind, especially when I have just finished a new piece. As a sculpture nears completion, my

Recently, I was approached by a major art curator to design five permanent interactive sculptures for a cruise ship, inspired by marine navigation. This o

The Intricacies of Kinetic Stainless Steel Sculptures
The Cost of Stainless Steel as a Material Stainless steel is the backbone of kinetic sculptures due to its durability, corrosion resistance, and aesthetic appeal. However, it is not a cheap material. The price of stainless steel fluctuates based on global demand, raw material availability, and manufacturing costs. For example: Grade 316 stainless steel, commonly utilised for outdoor sculptures, is pricier than other grades due to its excellent corrosion resistance. Additional

What is the point?
What is the point of doing anything in this country? I love making things, and that is how this little venture started. I love my retirement, pottering around in my shed, welding and fabricating. Now, I'm selling the things I make to help fund bigger and better projects that give me a greater challenge and a greater sense of achievement. Last year, I had to become a sole trader as the money coming in was above a thousand pounds. Yes, above £1,000.00. That is all the income th

Miniature power hammer
Upgraded power hammer without the floor stand suppot. But still working very well on 1.5mm 316 st steel I made some enhancements to my small power hammer belt grinder attachment. To boost the power, I started by increasing the hammer's rigidity and weight. Additionally, I extended the stroke and doubled up on the the springs. This increase caused the make shift belt I was using to slip, so I had to invest in a V-belt and pulley and added a spring-loaded tensioner. The additio

Alien Abduction
My latest piece a Dragon and an Alien is nearing completion. It has changed a little from my original design. The Alien came about as I needed an access port to be able to mount the dragon on the sphere. I did not want a hole or a plate that was obviously there for access only I wanted it to be part of the sculpture. So one night sitting in the pub reading a book I came up with this idea of having an Alien escaping from the egg / escape pod. I still have a bit of work to do o

New tool Thursday
I am still working on my latest piece; part two has proven to be quite a challenge. The little alien just did not go to plan, partly because the material I had/used was too thick. 1.5mm stainless steel just does not form very well. Well, stainless steel in general does not form very easily, especially 316. Forming the head pieces was hard enough, but when it came to the eyes, I just could not form them to the desired shape. Three attempts, three different methods, and three f

Dragon
The new dragon is coming along, the wings were an absolute pain to make and I have no idea how to finish them yet. I decided to MIG weld them together on the top seam as I wanted to build up a fillet of weld to make it look like gnarly joints. Regretting that now as MIG is so messy on stainless steel and it has left a lot of spatter all over the wings which I will have to grind off. And I am also not that sure it looks good so might run over them with the TIG torch anyway. Tr

Slip roller
For years I have wanted a slip roller and have had to either make do or drive to a friend's workshop and use his. This has been handy but not very convenient. The trouble with slip rollers of any worth is they are too big and heavy. I just do not have the room for one in my shed, plus they are also very expensive. Even a rusty old secondhand one on eBay starts at £500.00. So, necessity being the mother of invention, I designed and made my own. It's a reasonable size and bolts

Nearly finished
I have nearly finished my fourth new piece for the 2026 exhibitions, and it has been the most challenging piece to to date that I have made. I can't tell you how many days and sleepless nights I have spent trying to decide how to make it, even after I had all the metal cut and ready to weld. The metal sat in the hallway for at least a month. Every time I walked past it I kept thinking I have bitten off more than I could chew. I was planning to make a medium-sized set of slip

Still Standing
The first two stages My latest piece is awaiting some metal so I can make a mould for the lead ballast weight for the last section. The metal I had was not quite big enough, so the weight was too fat. I ordered the metal along with some other bits, and my order arrived, but sadly the two items I really wanted, Metals4u had forgotten to cut and supply. So I am still waiting for the metal. Not enough Lead It is all built except for the last and heaviest weighted section. That t
