New tool Thursday

I am still working on my latest piece; part two has proven to be quite a challenge. The little alien just did not go to plan, partly because the material I had/used was too thick. 1.5mm stainless steel just does not form very well. Well, stainless steel in general does not form very easily, especially 316.

Forming the head pieces was hard enough, but when it came to the eyes, I just could not form them to the desired shape. Three attempts, three different methods, and three failures. I then decided to make a small hammering jig with shaped anvil formers. I spent most of the day making this little hammer out of scrap and offcuts, not sure it would work. I didn't put a lot of effort into making a precision tool as I was still not confident it would work. But it worked much better than I thought. It took me less than an hour to make and fit the two eyes.

Happy days. It doesn't stop there, though, as I decided to power it. And after hours of looking into finding and buying a suitable electric motor, I thought I could make an adapter and power it on my belt grinder.

So far, it has only cost me a few M16 nuts that I had to buy as I was out of stock.

So I finished my prototype, and it works very well. I now want to improve the hammer so the heads are interchangeable and give it a bit more power.

I think if I double up the springs, I will also be able to run it faster.

And I need to add a foot pedal.
